Hi all, Along with a few others, I made a broad sweep through parts of Jackson, Vinton, and Lawrence counties, mostly in the latter. This is as far south as one can get in Ohio, and spring was much more advanced there than here in Columbus. Right along the Ohio River, where there is a noticeably warmer microclimate, the plants were really springing forth. We had 14 species of warblers, nearly all at least a few to many individuals. Following are a few of the highlights: Chimney Swift - Many Eastern Kingbird - 1 White-eyed Vireo - 4 Yellow-throated Vireo - 5 Blue-headed Vireo - 1 Red-eyed Vireo - 1 Purple Martin - Many Northern Rough-winged Swallow - Many Barn Swallow - All over the place Red-breasted Nuthatch - 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - Many Wood Thrush - 8+ Blue-winged Warbler - maybe 10 Northern Parula - Several Yellow-rumped Warbler - a few Black-throated Green Warbler - 3 Yellow-throated Warbler- Many Pine Warbler - Several Prairie Warbler - a dozen+ Cerulean Warbler - 2 Black-and-white Warbler - Many Ovenbird - Many Louisiana Waterthrush - Many Kentucky Warbler - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 1 Hooded Warbler - a few Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 Baltimore Oriole - 1 Pine Siskin And many more. I did manage some cool photos of a beautiful adult male Sharp-shinned Hawk with a fresh kill - a Brown-headed Cowbird! There are probably many who would like to award this sharpie with a medal, and if I ever figure out why my blog doesn't like and it lets me back into its good graces, I'll stick those pics up there.
