I visited Killdeer Plains WA this afternoon arriving at about 4:00 pm. Here are the highlights. On Washburn Road, I found a flock of 120 Lapland Longspurs, many males approaching full breeding plumage. I looked for Smith's Longspurs in the flock but found only Lapland Longspurs. It was hard to find birds against the background color of the corn stubble. A few (I saw 3.) American Pipits mixed in the flock. I found one Forster's Tern in one of the impoundments along T108 between C71 and C75. There was a single Bank Swallow in with a flock of Tree Swallows and a few Barn Swallows and some Northern Rough-winged Swallows. There are still waterfowl in the impoundments including Pond 27: Gadwall 50, Northern Shoveler 10 (all drakes), Ruddy Duck 2, Hooded Merganser 2, Ring-necked Duck 10, American Wigeon 4, Bufflehead 2. At the Hardin County Wetlands, I birded along T50 and C205. Savannah Sparrows were singing. My total count of American Golden Plovers was 35. There were 8 in the tilled field south of T50 west of and near the gravel pull offs and 27 along C205 north of the white building. Just before 6:00 pm, there was one Short-eared Owl flying over the fields west of C205 and north of the white building. In a muddy field south of T64 just east of the intersection with C205, there was a large flock of waterfowl: 120 Blue-winged Teal, 8 Green-winged Teal, 2 American Wigeon, 1 Northern Pintail and 10 Gadwall.
