I just returned from doing a breeding bird survey in Monroe County at and around the Lamping Homestead area (campground and picnic facility) on the Marietta Unit of the Wayne. On Monroe Township Road 307 at the first bridge crossing of Clear Fork stream (just south of the Lamping entrance) I heard a song that was unfamiliar to me. Searching it out brought me face to face with a beautiful male Wilson's warbler. No binoculars needed as it sat 10 feet in the open in front of me for a good 2 minutes. This is a new Ohio bird for me and one that is, to my knowledge, a first found on breeding bird surveys on the Athens Ranger District. Gazateer info is Page 72 southern end of C2 (Monroe County , Washington Township, Section 14). On my return to the office I also saw a Great Egret wading the Hocking River about 50 feet downstream of the Athens Wastewater Discharge outlet (Athens Co., Athens Township, close to the Route 50/U.S. Hwy 33 interchange....80 B2).
