I hiked around the Geauga parks new acquisition this morning looking for breeding birds and migrating songbirds. (It is not open yet, but the ATV riders use it freely.) Saw a red tailed hawk returning to the nest with a black squirrel. He deposited it the nest and flew off to a nearby perch accompanied by his mate. Scarlet tanagers, two, sang persistently from the tree tops. Also at least three great crested flycatchers calling loudly. I'd seen them in my own woods nearby on Saturday. Two more persistent callers, red-eyed vireos, high in the tree tops. Two blue headed vireos foraging in the maples, along several yellow rumped warblers. Several rose breasted grosbeaks calling from the edges of the woods.
