Just before sunset on May 1st, four willets were on the beach at Deer
Creek State Park. Apparently this has been a good year for finding them
as they are being seen in good numbers throughout much of the state.
Among them were several Caspian terns and about 10 forster's terns,
several herring gulls and many ring-billed gulls. About four common loons
were in the lake, all of them still showing winter plumage. In the
wetlands along New Holland Road there were two sandhill cranes and a large
amount of lesser and greater yellowlegs plus several Wilson's snipes.
Several species of ducks including ruddy, ring-necked and wigeon were also
observed. A male Blackburnian warbler bouncing around a cottonwood near
the marsh finished the day.
