Today two wonderful friends from West Virginia drove to Central Ohio to join me for an afternoon of birding at the Hoover Nature Preserve. Jim and Louise Casto recently scored 111 species at Crane Creek, however this did not include a Prothonotary Warbler. We quickly remedied that situation. Our first stop was Oxbow Road where the Prothonotary Warblers put on a show for us. Among the individuals we watched were two males banned in 2004. One male alit in the sunlight right above us and sang his heart out. From there we went to Area N where we observed many additional Prothonotary Warblers and some other nice species. It was a splendid day shared with friends and the birds. A partial list of species includes: Wood Duck Spotted Sandpiper Red-headed Woodpeckers (a possible third pair at Area N) Northern Flickers (at nest hole) Red-eyed Vireo Swainson’s Thrush Wood Thrush Northern Parula Palm Warbler American Redstart Prothonotary Warbler Scarlet Tanager Indigo Bunting Baltimore Oriole Charlie Bombaci Hoover Nature Preserve **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers.
