Last night I went down to Charlie's Pond in Pickaway County to try for the Black Rail. I stayed at the location for 2 hours, from 7:30-9:30. The rail called once during that time, at 8:25pm. Other birds observed included Henslow's Sparrows in the long grasses near the road west of Charlie's Pond, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow Warbler, Eastern Meadowlark (including a flock of 16 recently fledged youngsters), Common Grackle, Red-winged Blackbird, Vesper Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow (including juveniles), Killdeer, Turkey Vulture, Ring-necked Pheasant, European Starlings and Mourning Dove. Charlie's Pond is located just south of Circleville, on Radcliffe Road. Take US23 south and turn left on Radcliffe. Park on the top of the swale west of the pond where the ground is dry.
