Hi all, Just a cautionary note about "Yellow Rail". There is an amphibian, Blanchard's Cricket Frog, that sounds very much like Yellow Rail. More than a few birders have been fooled by these tiny frogs with the big, clicking voice. In fact, one of the greatest birding wild goose/rail chases in the state's history involved confusion between these two, but that's another story... I was at Charlie's Pond a few days ago and the cricket frogs were in full tune right in the same wet swale as the Black Rail. They were quite conspicuous. The tonal quality of this frog and Yellow Rail is similar enough that we included the frog on the same track with the rail on the Division of Wildlife's "Waterbirds of Ohio" CD, if you want to hear them side by side.
