I was sitting outside watching the fireflies last night just before dark at my house in Avon Lake when I saw what I thought was a woodpecker fly from over the house and land on the side of one of my large oak trees. I thought that was strange. I could see its profile against the darkening sky and realized after a moment it was not a bird but a flying squirrel. I walked over for a closer look to be sure and two more of them floated in above my head and landed beside the first one. All three of the squirrels playfully scrambled away up and around the tree with astonishing speed. Soon there were flying squirrels coming from the it seemed like everywhere. At least 4 more floated in during the next few minutes. One floated in from high and across the street with its body almost vertical. When they landed on the tree trunk they are almost invisible they are so well camouflaged. They are about the size of chipmunks. I thought this was pretty cool. So if you see what looks like a woodpecker flying after sunset, take another look. It could be a flying squirrel.
