Sunday, July 20, 2008, 3:45-5:45 p.m. Lorain impoundment & taconite dock areas, Lorain Observers: Paula Lozano & Bob Finkelstein This afternoon was our first visit to the impoundment area north of the International Marina at the foot of Colorado Avenue. We walked the dike and noted the following: Great Blue Heron - 7; 1 dead one along the northern edge of the area Green Heron - 2 Semipalmated Plover - 1 Killdeer ~12 Spotted Sandpiper ~10 Lesser Yellowlegs - 2 Semipalmated Sandpiper ~12 Least Sandpiper ~12 Short-billed Dowitcher - 1 Caspian Tern - 2 Eastern Phoebe - 1 Warbling Vireo - 1 Swallows: Northern Rough-winged, Barn Warblers: Yellow, Common Yellowthroat Then we went to the old taconite dock area, entering at an opening in the fence where Washington Street dead ends at 1st Street. There were more shorebirds, especially Killdeer and Semipalmated Sandpiers, in the puddles than at the impoundment but less diversity. By staying in the car, we got quite close to the birds without disturbing them. Paula Lozano Lakewood, Ohio **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring.
