I visited friends in Eagleport, Malta, McConnellsville, and visited the Stockport Mill Inn. We had a nice dinner at a nearby Stockport restaurant. My wife and I will be staying at the Inn for our fall retreat in early November. Unfortunately, I did not do any birding, but did do a lot of observation of the Muskingum River. I do hope to bird along the river on the next trip. Your county is very pretty and reminds me of some parts of my home county in SE Tennessee. Hopefully, sometime soon we will visit Burr Oak. sincerely, Joe D Phillips Columbus & Pataskala -----Original Message----- From: Ohio birds [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Glen Crippen Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2008 10:04 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [Ohio-birds] Morgan County Cuckoos I had three Yellow-billed Cuckoos and two Black-billed Cuckoos below the pond in the forest this evening (old DeLorme 70 D2). One of the Black-billeds was very cooperative in perfect light for extended time allowing for some good photos. The bird sat so contently in clear view for over 10 minutes preening and making some of the craziest sounds. The birds were spread out ranging from very close to way down in the forest below - one ravine over. It was amazing to hear them all at once. Black-billed is such a smaller bird, almost petite compared to the YB. It's bill was massive though. These birds are such graceful flyers. I'll post some images tomorrow or the next day on the forum if I can get them under the size limit and still do them justice. On a less fortunate note, Burr Oak Lake is very full of water unlike last year this time when I had around ten species of shorebirds off of Dock 3 road. I can't see any mudflat developing in the near future on the north end of the lake, especially if we keep getting thunderstorms like we have.
