I find fifteen reports of tricolored herons (not counting repeated
sightings at the same locality) this decade in the state. Six have been
widely scattered (Conneaut, Mallard Club, Catawba Isl,
Cuyahoga/Lake/Washington counties), but nine have come from the Sandusky
Bay area (Medusa, Pickerel & Pipe Creek WAs, Sheldon Marsh SNP), all
apparently adults as I recall. Does Sandusky Bay have the lion's share
of habitat preferred by this species? Up until the mid-'80s, however,
most tric records come from the ONWR area, and very few from the Bay. Or
perhaps there is a single bird involved recently. Records range from
April to 2008's September dates, the latest in recent years. Go figure.
