the fall's first significant wave of migrants was observed in woods just east of the fisherman's path and the east picnic area at headlands beach state park this morning (09/16/2008). at least 17 species of warblers and four species of vireos were noted. high numbers were recorded for philadelphia vireo, 12+, magnolia warbler and blackpoll warbler, 20+ each, and chestnut-sided warbler, 10+. the philadelphia vireos were particularly stunning with bright yellowish individuals and duller plumaged birds. no significant rarities have been noted by the headlands birders along the lake the last two days. the remnants of hurricane Ike brought a lone downed american golden-plover to the beaches and no rarities over the lake.
