No volunteer commitments today, thus I took advantage and did some pleasure birding. I began with a quick stop at Oxbow Road to check for the American White Pelican. As recently reported, a single American White Pelican is still present at the north end of Hoover Reservoir. I located the individual on the east shore just north of the Eastshore Yacht Club. It could be seen easily from the end of Oxbow Road. Also at Oxbow Road were high numbers of Yellow-rumped Warblers (20-30), and a single Palm Warbler, a single American Restart, Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and a few Brown Creepers. I later visited the pine groves behind the HQ Building off Old State Road at Alum Creek Park. The trees here took major hits from the recent wind storm and the area almost has a different look to it. I circled the trails and found constant and varied activity. The area was crawling with Ruby-crowned Kinglets and I saw approximately 30 individuals. A little pishing brought several in to within a few feet of me. These little guys are all personality. There were lesser numbers of Golden-crowned Kniglets, a few Brown Creepers. I was hoping to locate some Pine Siskins as they are being reported everywhere, but no luck. I located 2 Barred Owls in the north section and a Great Horned Owl in the south section. Yellow-rumped Warblers were common and everywhere, but during the looping of the trails. As I was heading back toward the car my final surprise was 6 Wild Turkeys in the area off the side of the trail. If I hadn't dropped the pencil I use for field notes I would have missed them. I'll take the day as we will not have too many more this nice.
