I went to the Wilds today and found the following birds - I could not detect any Golden Eagles yet. I will continue looking. Turkey Vulture - 13 American Crow - 8 Bald Eagle - 1 adult American Kestrel - 3 Rough-legged Hawk - 13 Harrier - 11 Red-tailed Hawk - 2 Great Blue Heron - 3 Canada Goose - 60 +/- Ring-necked Duck - 230+ Green-winged Teal - 35 Mallard - 27 Northern Pintail - 1 Gadwall - 3 Pie-billed Grebe - 1 Coot - 1 Killdeer - 7 Black-bellied Plover - 1 (persistent roadside dweller, would flush and fly back to roadside after each passing car) Snipe - 1 Savannah Sparrow - 3 Swamp Sparrow - 2 Song Sparrow - 3 Snow Bunting - 1 Horned Lark - 17 Also in Morgan County near Burr Oak Lake (old DeLorme 70 D2) the resident Great Horned Owls have been vigorously establishing their territories for the nesting season and apparently I live on the border of two of those. Several nights ago the persistent dueting started around 10:00 PM and still at 5:00 AM it continued. The assertive hooting could be heard echoing in the valleys below. Screech and Barred Owl have also been active lately with vocalizing birds heard before dusk and around dawn daily.
