John Habig just called. He and Rick Asamoto found two cave swallows at
the North Beach of Rocky Rocky Fork SP, SE of Hillsboro.
Take 124 south from town for 3-4 mi, then a left on North Shore Rd.,
past the campground, and then when you reach a Dollar General store turn
across the road to the North Beach. The birds were seen from shore with
the naked eye.
Cave swallows who survived the long (and misguided?) fall migration
into the Great Lakes and New England have been increasingly been seen
making southward moves overland this fall. Whether this is something
new, or something that always happened but very seldom noticed, is a
good question, but birders away from Lake Erie ought to keep an eye
peeled for swallows.
