Three of us birded at Killdeer Plains today. At parking lot L which is at the west end of Pond 27 we found a Northern Shrike. At a little after 9:00 we saw it fly from the south side of the road to land in a tree along the edge of the small pond beside the parking lot. After half a minute it flew again and we couldn't find it again. We returned to the area at about 11:30 and saw a single Brewer's Blackbird land. When it flew we walked to the dike and walked to the west end of it hoping to find the blackbird. We couldn't find it but heard a strange song. After listening for a couple minutes the shrike popped up and we got great looks at it. Apparently it was the shrike that was singing.
