Nothing that has not already been seen but a very nice afternoon nonetheless. Arrived about 4pm to see the first 4 Sandhills land between the islands and began feeding along the water line (on what??). About 15 minutes later the other 4 arrived. About 4:50pm 5 of the cranes lifted off majestically and flew to the N.W., followed a few minutes later by the other 3. Also saw 2 immature and one mature Bald Eagle around 4:30pm. Another birder spotted a black swan close to the road. It was fearless and allowed many pictures to be taken. Probably escaped from a local farm. Here are a few pictures. http://picasaweb.google.com/mvalencic/BlackSwanAtLaDue# <http://picasaweb.google.com/mvalencic/BlackSwanAtLaDue> A group of 7 swans was across the lake near the dam. Too far away to tell if they were tundra or trumpeter. Definitely NOT Mute Swans. Long black bills could be seen through the scope at 60x magnification. Hooded Merganser pair, two Ruddy's. lots of Ring-billed Gulls, Mallards, Coots, and two Killdeer.
