Today there were two Purple Sandpipers along the breakwall at Headlands Beach State Park, Mentor. They were feeding together and looking lovely in the sunlight. I know at least one person missed the birds, and an out-of-state visitor nearly missed them because they assumed that the sandpipers were out towards the lighthouse. This year all the Purples have frequented the wall much further inland which has made them easier to enjoy and has eliminated the need to brave the outer breakwall. A group of at least 500 scaup flew east in a scattershot formation, and a very pale Dunlin landed on the beach.
