Fox Sparrows can be locally common in northwestern Ohio during a brief period in early spring and late fall, but they're usually not easy to find in December. For the last couple of days there have been two Fox Sparrows right outside the window on wildlife at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, affording good looks and allowing several people to get good photos. The Black Swamp Bird Observatory is open from 11 to 5 today and tomorrow, Saturday Dec. 6 and Sunday Dec. 7, and it's located just north of Rt. 2 at the entrance to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, between Toledo and Port Clinton. If you happen to come out on Sunday between 1 and 5, I understand there will be additional attractions as part of BSBO's holiday open house.
