For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php Snow Goose: Frank Frick reported finding six mixed in with Canada Geese at the Fernald Nature Preserve on the 13th. Mike Sandy and his son saw six at Lorain Metroparks also on the 13th. Ross's Goose: Brad Sparks reported that there was one at Upper Sandusky Reservoir on the 13th. Cackling Goose: On the 12th Rick Asamoto and Shane Egleston found two at Old Reid Park near Buck Creek SP. Mike McKay found four on the Great Miami River in Dayton near the Stewart St Bridge on the 15th. Surf Scoter: Nancy Anderson located three at Sims Park on the 12th. John Pogacnik reported two on his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th. White-winged Scoter: On the afternoon of the 12th Nancy Anderson found two while birding at Sims Park. Black Scoter: Two were found at Sims Park by Nancy Anderson on the 12th. Craig Holt went to Conneaut Harbor on the 13th and found two. Long-tailed Duck: Craig Caldwell and the McCartys discovered one at E. 72nd St on the 13th just east of the warm water outlet and moving further east. Al La Sala reported one on the 13th at the Hoover Reservoir spillway. Craig Holt found one at Conneaut Harbor on the 13th and three at Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula. On the 16th one was found at Sims Park. Cheryl Harner and Judy Kolo-Rose reported either a female or immature bird at the Huron City Pier. Red-necked Grebe: Everitt Kitchen reported one on the south pond at Camp Dennison on the 14th. The bird apparently left soon after as Bob Foppe was not able to relocate the bird on the 16th. Franklin's Gull: During his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 13th John Pogacnik saw one immature bird. Also on the 13th Craig Caldwell and the McCartys found one at E. 72nd St just west of the outlet from the power plant. Little Gull: Kim Kaufman found one adult at the Bayshore Power Plant during the Toledo CBC on the 14th. John Pogacnik reported three adults and one immature on the 13th. Gabe Leidy reported one at Lorain on the 13th. BLACK-HEADED GULL: On the 13th John Pogacnik reported one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey. CALIFORNIA GULL: A single first-winter bird was found by Jen Brumfield at E. 72nd St on the 12th. Thayer's Gull: On the 12th Jen Brumfield found one at E.72nd St. Dan Sanders found a first-year bird at E. 72nd St on the 16th. Iceland Gull: Jen Brumfield reported one at E. 72nd St on the 12th. Possibly the same bird was seen on the 15th by Dan Sanders. Glaucous Gull: Jen Brumfield reported at least three at E. 72nd St on the 12th. Dan Sanders saw one first year bird at the same location on the 15th. Common Tern: Five were reported near the Bayshore Power Plant during the Toledo CBC on the 14th. Pomarine Jaeger: Matt Vosniak captured a fantastic photo of the jaeger at Avon Lake on the 13th. This is probably the same bird that was seen last week at this site affording many observers great looks. The bird was seen again on the 14th by Tim Colburn and on the 15th by Dan Sanders. The bird was still being seen through the 18th. PARASITIC JAEGER: John Pogacnik reported that one was seen during the Lake Erie Islands CBC on the 14th. Snowy Owl: Jen Brumfield reported that the immature owl was seen on the 12th at Burke Airport. Airport officials were attempting to scare the bird away with a flare gun. Jen reported that the owl flew over the phragmites and out of sight. The effort by the officials apparently failed as Dan Sanders refound the bird at the airport on the 15th. Long-eared Owl: Four were found at Maumee Bay SP on the 14th. Northern Saw-whet Owl: Two calling birds were heard on the 14th at Maumee Bay SP. SAY'S PHOEBE: The Bobolink Rare Bird Hotline reported a one day wonder that showed up in Holmes County near the intersection of SR 226 and SR 3 on the 14th. Northern Shrike: Lisa Rainsong reported one at Swine Creek Reservation in Geauga County on the 12th. Rich McCarty found one near West Union during the Adams County CBC on the 15th. Two hours later Mark Zloba found an immature bird in his section of the CBC circle. Warbling Vireo: The Bobolink Rare Bird Hotline reported on the 18thy that the vireo first reported on November 19th was still being seen. This bird is believed to be of the western race. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: Accidental in December John Pogacnik reported that one was found on the 14th during the Lake Erie Islands CBC. Black-throated Blue Warbler: The male originally reported in Mahoning County on the 6th remained at least through the 13th. This could represent a confirmed late record for Ohio. Bobolink: Brian Zwiebel located one during the Toledo CBC on the 14th near an impoundment at the Bayshore Power Plant. The bird was seen by several other observers. This bird should have been in Argentina two months ago. Lincoln's Sparrow: Accidental in December one was found at the Bayshore Power Plant on the 14th. Dickcissel: One was seen at the feeders at Blendon Woods on the 14th during the Columbus CBC. Gene Stauffer took photos that confirm the ID. White-winged Crossbill: White-winged Crossbills were still widely reported though in much smaller numbers. Last week Secrest Cemetery had 28 - 30. That number was down to two on the 12th. Greg Links saw two males in the Lambertville/Temperance area on the 13th. Brad Sparks found a male at Oak Hill Cemetery in Wyandot County on the 13th. Jim Miller reported that 15 were seen at the Wooster OARDC on the 13th. Patrick Coy reported five at CVNP near the intersection of Riding Run Trail and Everett Road on the 13th while Dwight Chasar found seven to ten along the Boston Run Trail.
