Yesterday Rick and I did some birding along Rte 32 and at East Fork SP. Most of the lake was open at East Fork where we had Common Goldeneye, Black Ducks, Mallards, Canvasbacks, Ring-billed Gulls, Pied-billed Grebe, Bufflehead, and Canada Geese. We were birding from the beach and most of the birds were along the ice shelf on the opposite side of the lake. On the south side of Rte 32 and just west of Bodman Rd there was a pond that had some open water. A safer place to observe from here is to go south on Bodman and turn right onto Hess. The pond is less than a mile down Hess. There we found at least 4,000 Canada Geese, 10 Greater White-fronted Geese, 4 Snow Geese, 14 Pintails, 3 Redheads, and 100s of Mallards. At the southwest corner of Rte 32 at Rte 68 we found a frozen pond behind the Wendy's. We would not have seen it except for all of the geese flying in. There we found 2,000 Canada Geese, 4 Snow Geese, 14 Greater White-fronted Geese, 6 Cackling Geese, Pintails, and Mallards. There were also two Savannah Sparrows along the chain link fence surrounding the pond. At the Cincinnati Nature Center we found 7 Pine Siskins at the feeders. Most of the lake at Rocky Fork SP was frozen but there were some open spots. When we arrived there it was getting dark and couldn't identify everything there but could make out Canada Geese and Mallards. There was an immature Bald Eagle on the ice farther down the lake eating something.
