Since we didn't get upstream along the Scioto River on the Saturday field trip, I used Sunday morning to visit some of these sites. I stopped at Long St. dam (which has a small open area),picking up a small flocks of Mallards and Hooded Mergansers, along with a sapsucker in the small riparian woods here. Then I then worked the neighborhoods of Grandview Heights and Upper Arlington looking for winter finches. These neighborhoods have plenty of conifer plantings, and had plenty of birds, just no siskins, crossbills, or purple finches. Finally I stopped at Griggs, which was its usual terrific freeze-concentrated waterfowl spot. Below the dam here were Canada Goose - 1700 Mallard - 800 Black Duck - 25 Canvasback - 1 Ring-necked Duck - 45 Bufflehead - 2 Common Goldeneye - 5 Hooded Merganser - 10 American Coot - 1 Landbirds were also interesting here, with highlgihts being Cooper's Hawk - 1 Red-tailed Hawk - 1 Robin - 175 Hermit Thrush - 1 Golden-cr.Kinglet - 4 ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
