This location was moderately productive from 10:30-12:30 AM, this New Years Day. The birds were completely pushed out at times, and there were never really large numbers concentrated close to shore. The oddball birds spotted this morning were perhaps the most exciting - the leucistic Bonaparte's Gull remains and came in close with a flock of Bonies to feed, and both GlaucousXHerring and Great Black-backedXHerring hybrids were present. The GlaucousXHerring type, or "Nelson's" Gull, offered great studies for 15 minutes or so. This first-cycle bird was intermediate between Glaucous and Herrng Gulls in most facets - primary/wingtip coloration and pattern, tail pattern/coloration, overall size/structure and color, with a Glaucous-type bill. At first glance, it appeared to be a Glaucous Gull, but sported dark brown wingtips and tertials. This bird looks very Thayer's-like in flight, so study your bills carefully. The Great Black-backedXHerring bird was an adult, similar to those which were present here all of last winter. Three Long-tailed Ducks and a Horned Grebe were also present.
