I finally came across some white-winged crossbills yesterday afternoon; 4 feeding in a hemlock along Cooper Rd. in Coitsville Twp. They flew off when a Cooper's hawk made a pass through the neighborhood. I couldn't relocate the crossbills later, and they weren't there this morning either. Other interesting birds in the area were red-shouldered hawk, pileated woodpecker, n. mockingbird, eastern towhee, song sparrow, 3 white-throated sparrows, and Am. tree sparrows. I checked the Mahoning River from Lowellville to Struthers this morning and found Am. black ducks, a canvasback, 5 ring-necked ducks, 6 buffleheads, 15 c. goldeneyes, and 15 hooded mergansers. There was less ice on the river than there was a few days ago. There's no other open water around for miles that I know of. Anyone who can find open water now will likely find good birds there. Even normally-boring stretches of rivers could harbor a white-winged scoter or Harlequin duck.
