I stopped by Spring Valley after work today to look for the Virginia Rails that were found there last week. I am pleased to report that at least one of them has survived the latest weather onslaught. I saw one feeding near the spring where it overflows the new beaver dam. I did not see the Marsh or Winter Wrens while I was there. I only had time to walk to the spring, which has begun to thaw out, and down the boardwalk. If you are going to see the rail tomorrow may be the best time to go because the leads are starting to open up and the rail(s) will have more areas to roam in. I did not see any Rusty Blackbirds while I was there (from about 4:30 to 5:15) but there may have been some that came in to roost after I left. They are usually at Spring Valley in the winter. Spring Valley is one of the areas I plan on checking for the Rusty Blackbird Blitz that begins on the 7th and runs through the 15th.
