The White-winged Crossbills that Doug Overacker found at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield were still there at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. We drove slowly around the whole cemetery, closely inspecting every evergreen tree with cones, and finding nothing. At some point, we happened upon a mixed flock of Goldfinches, Siskins, Juncos, White Throated Sparrows, Chickadees and robins. At one point, a pinkish bird flew into a sweetgum tree with all the other birds, and with my naked eye I thought I had found a nice male Purple Finch, but the view in binoculars revealed a spectacular White-winged Crossbill. I spotted a few birds near the top of a big spruce tree, and upon closer inspection, was able to identify a female crossbill as well. Thanks Doug!!
