My friend Julie Karlson was watching outside her house in Yellow Springs today and saw a Red-shouldered Hawk eating earthworms. She said it would jump up and pounce on the large earthworms and then eat them. She watched this behavior for several minutes. It was at Mills Lawn which is the elementary school in downtown Yellow Springs. A couple years ago Julie, Brian Menker, and I were birding in South Carolina and watched a Red-shouldered Hawk early one morning eating earthworms in a park. It was a lawn that was used for sports. This is a food source they must take advantage of when it is available.
