Things were very different at East 72nd today. The south winds last night opened the lake up. I didn't have high hopes, but with sunny skies and 40 degree temperatures it was an excuse to get out. When I got there the lake was opened up a lot more than at my house. The only waterfowl present were 1 tundra swan, a few Canada geese, 3 lesser and 1 greater scaup, 3 bufflehead, and an American coot. There were a few ring-billed gulls feeding and that was about it up close. Overhead, there was a steady flow of gulls moving west. It paid off to watch them. In an hour and a half I had 9 glaucous gulls, 3 Iceland gulls, 1 Thayer's gull, and 1 lesser black-backed gull.. None of them hung around, but they gave some great looks in today's sunlight as they passed overhead. The only other birds of note was an American kestrel out on the ice, a flyby peregrine falcon, and a flyby adult bald eagle.
