It was windy at Buck Creek State Park but we managed to identify 13 species of ducks and three species of gulls including at least 2 first winter Glaucous Gulls this morning. The gulls were at the north end of the reservoir accessed from Grant Road. There were over a thousand Ring-billed Gulls on the lake and a number of Herring Gulls also. Many of the gulls were sitting on the ice closely packed and difficult to look through but the Glaucous Gulls towered over the smaller Ring-billeds. We also found 13 species of ducks on the lake. Included were Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Mallard, Northern Pintail (at least 50), Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, and Common Merganser. I also saw my first Horned Grebe of the year.
