The following message from the Ornithological Societies of North America may be of interest to members of this list. It represents a significant step forward in making the AOU checklist more accessible and useful. I believe that the service is free to all, at least I was not asked for my member number when I clicked on the link. The online checklist includes all the birds of the AOU area, which now includes Central America. Central American species are interdigitated among the North American species in taxonomic order. There does not seem to be any quick and easy way to separate them and that may be annoying to some users whose interests lie strictly among birds that regularly occur north of the Mexican border. There is a link to the Birds of North American account of the target bird. BNA is a subscription service managed by the Laboratory of Ornithology. The subscription is included as a perk for AOU members, which is another good reason for joining. The check-list is now in a searchable database. Users can browse the full list of species as well as search by scientific/common name, family, or order. They can also download the entire list or their search results in an Excel compatible text file. Species names in the search results table are linked to the respective Birds of North America account ( http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/), if an account is available online. The new check-list page also has a link to the committee's main web page (http://aou.org/committees/nacc/index.php3), the 7th Check-list and supplements, pending and prior proposals, and guidelines for submitting a proposal. -- Robert D Powell Congress Farm Research Institute Wilmington, OH, USA [log in to unmask] http://rdp1710.wordpress.com Nulla dies sine aves ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
