I may as well chime-in on the biggest looser forum. 51 Ohio birds for January (my biggest January to date) with a bunch of ducks (E. 72nd Street) on the last day. Finally scored on WWCB's today as we drove around Geauga County watching raptors. They were in someone's yard on the road that leads to the boat house at LaDue Reservoir along with a Pine Siskin and a single Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Also saw one mature Bald Eagle being bothered by two R-t Hawks on Spring Valley Road next to LaDue, several Red-tail's and Red-shouldered, one Rough-legged and a Merlin near Middlefield and some pretty Cedar Waxwing's. Also the usual winter resident birds throughout the trip. A great day to be afield! I even washed the car when I got home - now it will snow again for sure! My Licking Co. only total for January was 48. Best birds, the black vultures just west of Granville along Route 161. I also had snow buntings and northern harrier at the Croton egg farms. My only day totally dedicated to birding was Jan. 2. The rest were all yard birds or seen commuting. However, how's this for being a loser: As I was just shoveling the ice off my driveway, I *finally* saw a flock of white-winged crossbills leave the mature hemlock trees that border the back yard of a neighbor one sreet over. Unfortunately, they don't count - it's not January any longer - thank goodness! We're one month closer to spring migration, and we're already within the safe dates of several species of birds, particularly horned owl. So, I'll be looking out for those in my 7 OBBA II blocks, beginning this week.
