I have had a lot of computer trouble lately & was unable to report a number of sightings. Consequently, I have had to change providers. Now, I should be able to report a few better sightings. On Saturday, March 7, while driving on US 23, just north of the Sylvania Exit, about 11:30 AM, I encountered 4 Swainson's Hawks. The first 2 were sitting on the same branch about 2 feet apart, facing me, from about 400 to 200 feet away. The third was sitting on a branch, facing north, away from me, although his body was twisted around & he was looking in my direction. He was about 150 yards past the first two. The fourth was about 100 yards further on. He was flying, only about 100 feet above me. He was approaching the road from the West & was only about 100 feet from me as I passed. All had white breasts, chocolate heads & brown backs. The Line of delination between the breast & head was especially sharp. Since I have worked in the west, most of my adult life, I am quite familiar with this bird, probably having seen over a thousand of them, most quite close up. On my return trip, after church was over, about 3 hours later, I may have seen another, in the same general location. He was about 200 feet above me, sitting in a tree top, & was backlit, so I can only say he was the same size & shape as the others. Monday, March 9, I birded Magee Marsh. When done, while driving by the small lake, between the road & boardwalk, a sparrow fiew across the road & landed in some brush. I stopped, found him, glassed him. It was a Lark Sparrow, first I've seen in a long time. Friday, May 13, when returning from Magee Marsh, Mamee Bay SP, etc., while driving south on the Anthony Wayne trail, just before the entrance to the zoo, a Short-eared Owl, flew over my car. It was about 7 PM. Hope this provider does better than the last one. V.
