Hi all, ??? As I arrived back from the store this morning, I noticed a unique song coming from a pine near my apartment, in N Columbus less than 1/2 mile from Highbanks Metropark. I grabbed my bins and chased the bird down, and discovered a single male Red Crossbill associating with House Sparrows at the top of two cone-laden pines just outside of my front door. It continued singing and giving the distinctive "kip-kip-kip" call for about 5 minutes before flying off. I haven't heard of any recent reports of these birds- which were relatively common in Ohio this winter- but it is interesting to note that some are still migrating through. In fact, they sometimes can be seen into May.
