Ohio Bird Records Committee Secretary Ned Keller shared with us at our last meeting a list of birds accepted over the past ten years, thanks to acceptable documentation prepared and submitted by many Ohio observers. Since it'll be a while before March 2009 information appears in print, I thought I'd pass along a brief summary. From 1999-2008, the Committee accepted documentations of 161 occurrences of review species (those species requiring good back-up documentation before they can enter accepted records). Sixty-eight species were involved. Harris's sparrow led the way with 14 records; black-necked stilt had 12, Kirtland's warbler 11, and California gull and ruff 10. Fourteen species were added to the Ohio list during the decade: Anna's hummingbird black-bellied whistling-duck brown-headed nuthatch Calliope hummingbird cave swallow common ground-dove Eurasian collared-dove garganey green violetear red-naped sapsucker sooty tern white-throated swift Previously unpublished and added only at the last meeting were dusky flycatcher (6/3/2005, Ottawa Co.) and reddish egret (6/5 and 6/14/2008, Ashtabula Co). The official Ohio list stands at 422 species. Further details will eventually be published.
