Hello! Early yesterday evening (Thursday, April 9th), I hiked various trails at Highbanks Metro Park in southern Delaware County where the following notable birds were heard and/or observed: Wild Turkey-4 observed in the field adjacent to the wetlands trail. Brown Thrasher-heard 1 singing near the wetlands (first-of-season for Highbanks). Barn Swallow-1 first-of-season observed at the wetlands. Fox Sparrow-saw/heard several in the back loop of the pet trail; a few were perched heartily singing their beautiful song. I have observed at least a dozen in that area over the past several days. White-Throated Sparrow-several seen and heard singing near the back part of the pet trail. Tree Swallow-15-20 at the wetlands. Eastern Bluebird-several pairs near Bluebird boxes at various locations. Eggs have been laid in a couple of boxes that I monitor. Louisiana Waterthrush-it was reported today on the "bird siting board" inside of the Nature Center that one has been observed (I did not see it). Barred Owl-1 peeking out of cavity of dead tree adjacent to the Dripping Rock trail. Yellow-Rumped Warbler-several near the pond by the pet trail. Some were observed along this stretch of trail all of this past winter. Golden-Crowned Kinglet-several along the Dripping Rock and Overlook Trails. They have been quite numerous over the past week or so. No signs yet of Yellow-Throated Warblers in the sycamores along the Olentangy River. Also, no signs yet of possible Great-Horned Owlets in the sycamore tree where GHOWs have nested the past several years. I have observed the male perched in his traditional roosting pine tree near the sycamore tree several times over the past couple of months. Hopefully, this is a sign that there is an active nest this year in the nearby sycamore tree.
