Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php Ross's Goose: Rick Counts found one at the Hardin County Wetlands on the 11th. Eurasian Wigeon: The Cullens located one along TR 34 in Seneca County on the 10th. Rick Counts observed one at the Hardin County Wetlands on the 11th. Rick reported that one was there on March 24th and this may be the same bird? Since March 6th Eurasian Wigeons have been reported at nine different locations in Ohio, all but one at inland locations. These wigeons have been reported from nine different locations this year. White-winged Scoter: The Cullens observed one at a quarry near Luckey on the 11th. Long-tailed Duck: Rick Oxley reported that one was at Conneaut on the 11th. Bob Royse located two at Deer Creek SP on the 16th. Red-throated Loon: One was at Clear Fork Reservoir on the 11th. Red-necked Grebe: Gregory Bennett observed one at Wellington Reservoir on the 14th. Ruffed Grouse: Matthew Studebaker observed two on the 12th along one of the north roads in Shawnee SF. Little Blue Heron: Barb Schwallie well described one that was at Armleder on the 11th. Golden Eagle: Dan and Barb Myers observed two from the observation tower at Magee Marsh on the 9th. Black-bellied Plover: John Pogacnik saw a single plover on the 11th along Veler Rd at the area that Ottawa NWR is controlling for shorebird habitat. Least Sandpiper: The Cullens found two early Leasts on the 10th along TR 205 in Sandusky County. John Pogacnik observed two along Veler Rd on the 12th. Franklin's Gull: The Cullens observed one at a pond east of Cygnet on the 11th. Lesser Black-backed Gull: Su Snyder reported that one adult was at Pleasant Hill Lake on the 14th. Perhaps the large number of, usually rare, sightings from inland reservoirs this year was a result of the long cold winter in Ohio this year pushing the birds further south in search of food. Northern Saw-whet Owl: Chris Knoll heard one calling from the east end of the Magee Marsh boardwalk on the 10th. COMMON RAVEN: Jay Lehman, Curt Dusthimer and the compiler saw and heard one near the large vista area at Fernwood SF on the 11th. MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD: This very accommodating bird has been seen by hundreds of birders and was still being seen as of the 16th. The location to find this bird is at the junction of Sager and Wilkins roads just west of the Toledo Airport in the Oak Openings area. Lincoln's Sparrow: An early Lincoln's was seen by Mary Warren at the Magee Marsh Boardwalk on the 16th. GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW: Bob Sams reported the sparrow was still present in Hancock County on the 16th. SMITH'S LONGSPUR: At least two, a male and a female, were found on private property in NW Mercer County about 2.5 miles west of Rockford on Manley Road. These longspurs prefer fields with corn stubble and foxtail during migration. Make sure to ask for permission before entering private property. Gabe Leidy reported seeing at least 35 on the 14th. He managed to get some documentary photos. The birds were still present today and have been seen by many observers. Western Meadowlark: One remains west of Cygnet at the intersection of Cygnet Rd and Rangeline Road. Tom Kemp discovered another one on the 10th outside the Bowling Green fitness center at SR 64 and Newton Roads. Brewer's Blackbird: One was seen briefly near New Bedford on the 12th. White-winged Crossbill: Ryan Steiner observed one singing along the Ridge Trail at Oak Openings MP on the 11th. Marilyn Rohr saw one at her feeder in Chardon on the 15th. Sean Williams reported that three were at Bohannon Nature Preserve in Delaware County on the 16th. - End Transcript John Habig Carlisle, OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
