Yesterday (4.21.09) ahead of the strong SW winds and over a 45 minute time period, I observed at least 55 Broad-winged Hawks (possibly many more and just not visible) at high altitude streaming over the north end of Burr Oak Lake in Morgan County (DeLorme 70 D2). This flight was occurring pretty high up and some birds were in the lower cloud layers and sometimes between gusts of wind I could very faintly hear these birds calling in flight. It was incredible - these raptors were moving very quickly and were quite vocal at times. This is by far the best concentration and highest count of this species that I have observed in this part of the state.
