Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php WHEW!!! What a great week for Ohio’s Birders. We had a first state record Golden-crowned Sparrow and our second visit by a Mountain Bluebird. Western Meadowlark added to the western essence this week. Eurasian Wigeon: Ben Warner reported that one was at Killdeer Plains WA on the 8th. One was also seen at Springville Marsh on the 8th. White-winged Scoter: Bob Lane reported that two were on a pond behind the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Rd west of the Ohio Turnpike on the 3rd. John Pogacnik observed three during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 5th. Heather Raymond reported that two were at Clearfork Reservoir on the 5th. Long-tailed Duck: John Pogacnik observed one during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 4th. Ruffed Grouse: Dave Horn located one on private property in Hocking County about 2˝ miles west of Ash Cave on the 9th. Red-throated Loon: Heather Raymond observed one at Clearfork Reservoir on the 5th. Jason Cade observed one at Caesar Creek SP on the 7th. Red-necked Grebe: Greg Bennett reported that two were at Berlin Reservoir south of Rte 224 on the 4th. Mike Gordon reported that one was above the dam at Providence Park in Grand Rapids on the 5th. Green Heron: A little on the early side was one that Barb Hohman reported that her husband saw on the 3rd in Washington County. Dan Barda reported that another one was at Detwiler Marsh on the 5th. Golden Eagle: Doug Vogus observed one immature at Ottawa NWR on the 5th. Iceland Gull: John Pogacnik observed one first-cycle during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 4th. Lesser Black-backed Gull: Larry Gara reported that one was on the beach at Caesar Creek SP on the 8th. Bob Powell described the bird as being at the end of its third cycle. These gulls are getting rare in Ohio at this time of year and are always rare at inland reservoirs. One was still at Buck Creek SP last week. It will be interesting to see how long these birds stay around. EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Greg Spahr reported that one was in a plowed field just north of Oakes Quarry in Green County on the 5th. Northern Saw-whet Owl: John Pogacnik reported that he found one on private property in Leroy Twp, Lake County on the 2nd. Dan Gesualdo heard one at the far eastern end of the boardwalk at Magee Marsh on the 2nd. Chris Knoll reported that one, or maybe two, were heard near the bridge on the Magee Marsh boardwalk on the 4th by Lee Garling and Jeff Abke. COMMON RAVEN: Gabe Leidy and Emil Bacik saw a single bird in Jefferson County on the 4th. The location was just west of the “Nature Works” dam on CR-26. Just beyond the dam make a sharp left turn onto a dirt road into an immense reclaimed strip mine area and continue for about ˝ mile or so to where the road starts to get rough. It appears the best time to see the Ravens is in the afternoon as that is when most postings have stated they were seen. Bank Swallow: Kenn Kaufman located an early arrival at Ottawa NWR on the 9th. House Wren: Neill Cade observed two slightly early wrens at Miami Whitewater Wetlands on the 5th. MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD: A second state record for Ohio. Pat Pulcini reported that one was at the intersection of Rte 295 and Wilkins at Oak Openings MP on the 5th. There have been many observers that have gone to see this very cooperative bird. There are some reports filtering in that the bird may have been present for the past week. The bluebird was still present as of 4:00 this afternoon. This bluebird has been well described and photographed. The first Mountain Bluebird was reported in December 1989 and stayed for one month. Lark Sparrow: Greg Spahr observed two at Oakes Quarry in Green County on the 5th. GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW: A first state record for Ohio. One was photographed just east of Findley on the 7th. The property owners have requested that the location be kept confidential. Bob Sams described very well the logistical issues in visiting this property and we all need to respect the wishes of the owners and not put any undue stress on them for not allowing visitors. Western Meadowlark: One has returned to Cygnet Rd at the intersection with Range Line Rd in Wood County. White-winged Crossbill: John Pogacnik reported that 12 were along a road near Hell Hollow Park on the 2nd. Common Redpoll: John Pogacnik had a single redpoll at his feeders on the 4th. - End Transcript John Habig Carlisle, OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
