Eurasian Wigeon: Charlotte Mathena reported that the wigeon observed in Pond 3 at Killdeer Plains WA was still present on the 28th. Doug Overacker saw the bird again on the 29th. Surf Scoter: Jay Lehman reported that one breeding plumage male was near the parking lot to the visitor center at Buck Creek SP on the 26th. The bird was still present on the 29th. One was at Clear Fork Reservoir on the 27th and 28th. John Pogacnik observed two during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 28th. Rob Thorn found a pair at Alum Creek east of the Hollenback Rd marina on the 28th. Rob Lowry reported that one was at Deer Creek SP on the 28th. On the 29th Paula Lozano observed one male and two females at Edgewater SP. Su Snyder reported that a pair was at Pleasant Hill Lake on the 30th and remained at least through the 1st. One was reported at Willard Reservoir on the 2nd. White-winged Scoter: Larry Gara reported that one was still present at Cowan Lake SP near the South Shore Marina on the 27th. Doug Overacker reported that a female was at CJ Brown Reservoir on the 28th. Bruce Glick reported that one was close to shore at Picnic Area 4 of Clear Fork Reservoir on the 28th. Su Snyder reported that three were at Wright Marsh in Killbuck WA on the 28th. Long-tailed Duck: Su Snyder reported that a male was near the marina at Pleasant Hill Lake on the 30th through the 1st. A female was reported at the Defiance City Reservoir on the 1st. The reservoir is located in the west/southwest part of Defiance about ¾ miles west of S. Clinton off Kiser Road. Ruffed Grouse: Glenn Crippen reported that one was on his property in Morgan County on the 27th. Ben Morrison reported that he heard one drumming near Fernwood SF along C-26 near the intersection of T-184 on the 27th. Red-throated Loon: Jay Lehman reported that one was at the northern end of CJ Brown Reservoir on the 26th. The bird was still present on the 29th. Bruce Glick reported that two were at Clear Fork Reservoir on the 28th. The two remained at least through the 2nd. Rick Asamoto reported that one immature bird was in the north pool at Caesar Creek SP on the 30th. Su Snyder reported that one was at Wellington Reservoir on the 31st. Gabe Leidy reported the loon was still present at Wellington Reservoir on the 1st. Red-necked Grebe: Bruce Glick reported one and possibly two were at Clear Fork Reservoir on the 28th. Greg Miller reported the grebe was still present on the 2nd. Doug Overacker reported that one was at CJ Brown Reservoir on the 28th. The bird was still present on the 29th. Rob Lowry reported that one was at Deer Creek SP and another one was at Haul Road Quarry Lake on the 28th. Su Snyder reported that one was at Wellington Reservoir on the 31st. Gabe Leidy reported the grebe was still present at Wellington Reservoir on the 1st. One was at the Defiance City Reservoir on the 1st. American White Pelican: Charlie Bombaci reported seeing one along the west shore of Hoover Reservoir just south of Area K on the 28th. American Bittern: Ben Morrison reported that one was at Guilford Lake in Columbiana County along Depot Rd on the 27th. The bird was in the wetlands at the east end of the lake. Su Snyder reported that one was at Funk Bottoms WA on the 28th. One was heard at Spring Valley on the 2nd. Yellow-crowned Night-Heron: Bill Whan reported that one was back at the traditional Columbus nesting spot for the 13th straight year on the 1st. Osprey: Brenda Baber reported that one was observed by Emil Bacik during the Conneaut Hawk Watch on the 24th. Craig Holt reported on the 28th that a pair has returned to Berlin Reservoir. Charlie Bombaci reported that a pair was near their nest site at the north end of Hoover Reservoir on the 28th. Sally Isacco reported that one was at Mosquito Lake on the 29th. Richard Stelzer reported that a pair was building a nest at Pickerington Ponds near the Glacier Knoll Observation Desk on the 30th. Jill Bowers reported that one was present at Grand-Lake St. Mary’s on the 30th. Tim Colborn observed one in North Olmstead on the 2nd. Matt Anderson observed one in Whitehouse on the 2nd. Northern Goshawk: Brenda Baber reported that one adult was observed by Emil Bacik during the Conneaut Hawk Watch on the 24th. Merlin: Lou Gardella reported that one female was in section 86 on the 30th and one in section 90 on the 31st. Lou also reported that no males have been seen for weeks and have presumably headed for the breeding grounds. Virginia Rail: Chris Knoll reported that three were banded at Ottawa NWR on the 26th. Steve Bobonick had nice views of two at Spring Valley WA on the 28th. Rick Counts reported that one was at the Hardin County Wetlands on the 28th. Sora: Rick Counts reported that three were at the Hardin County Wetlands on the 28th. Lesser Yellowlegs: Chris Knoll reported that five were seen along Benton-Carroll Rd on the 26th. Two were seen there on the 27th. Reports also came from the Shreve Fish Pond on the 28th. Rob Lowry reported that a half dozen were at Deer Creek SP on the 28th. Doug Overacker reported that one was on the mudflats off Grant Rd at Buck Creek SP on the 28th. One was also seen there on the 29th. Inga Schmidt reported that four were at Frohring Meadows on the 29th. Regina Schieltz reported that one was at Twin Bridges wetland near Union City on Union City-Palestine Rd off of Rte 571 on the 1st. Least Sandpiper: Troy Shively observed some at the intersection of Twp Rd 33 and Co Rd 11 on the 1st. Dunlin: Jim Dolan reported that two were observed at Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary on the 1st. Long-billed Dowitcher: Rare in Spring Troy Shively observed one inland at the intersection of Twp Rd 33 and Co Rd 11 on the 1st. Iceland Gull: John Pogacnik observed one first-cycle during his Lakeshore Waterbird Survey on the 28th. Lesser Black-backed Gull: Doug Overacker reported that one first-cycle was present at the north end of CJ Brown Reservoir on the 28th. Rick Asamoto saw a first-cycle on the beach at CJ Brown Reservoir and an adult in breeding plumage at the north end of the lake on the 29th. There were two possible Lessers at Caesar Creek SP on the 30th. Caspian Tern: Rob Edelen observed one at East Fork SP on the 26th. Long-eared Owl: Phil Chaon flushed one near Camp Sabrowski south of Rte 2 on the 27th. Northern Saw-whet Owl: Phil Chaon heard three near the beach at Magee Marsh on the 28th. Ruby-throated Hummingbird: Based on a second hand report from Jeff Maass they have arrived back in Ohio. The website www.hummingbirds.net reports that there have been three sightings during this reporting period. These birds would be about 10-15 days earlier than expected and identification should be verified to make sure that they are not Rufous Hummingbirds. Northern Shrike: Chris Knoll reported that one was still present at Magee Marsh as of the 26th. Su Snyder reported that one was present at Wright Marsh on the 28th. COMMON RAVEN: Rob Lowry reported that one was seen flying at Fernwood SF in Jefferson County along T-181 on the 26th. Ben Morrison reported seeing three on C-26 in the area of Fernwood SF on the 27th. They were seen about a mile west of the access road to the Round Top picnic area. Purple Martin: Rick Asamoto observed five at Rocky Fork SP on the 27th. Sean Williams reported that one was flying over the City of Delaware on the 30th. Kathi Hutton had three scouts checking out the housing in Felicity, Clermont County, on the 1st. Northern Rough-winged Swallow: Kirk Westendorf reported that one was at Armleder on the 25th. Gary Cowell reported that one was at Clear Fork Reservoir on the 29th. Barn Swallow: Kenn Kaufman found one at Toussaint WA on the 30th. Kirk Westendorf observed one at Armleder on the 30th. Ruby-crowned Kinglet: Casual at this time of year one was reported by Nick Boutis to be at Glen Helen on the 29th. Len Powlick reported two were at Greenlawn Cemetery on the 2nd. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: Glen Crippen found an early one on his property in Morgan County on the 29th. Yellow-throated Warbler: Jim McCormac reported that one was singing in Bernie Master’s backyard on the 23rd and on the 24th. David Fankhauser heard one in Nine Mile Valley on the 27th. William Hull spotted three at Spring Grove Cemetery on the 2nd. Louisiana Waterthrush: David Fankhauser observed some at Nine Mile Creek on the 27th. Mark Gilsdorf reported that two were at the Cincinnati Nature Center on the 28th. Becky Wright heard two on the 28th on Lawrence Twp Rd 19 (Cow’s Run) between Rte 26 and Washington County Rd 9. Nick Boutis reported that one was at Glen Helen on the 29th. Ann Cramer reported hearing one on Price Rd in Hocking County on the 28th. Dawn McCoy reported that they have returned to Fairfield County as of the 31st. Scott Albaugh reported that one was in Jefferson County on the 1st. The Neubauers reported that one was at Aullwood on the 1st. Brewer’s Blackbird: Bill Whan reported that two were in a field just north of Killdeer Plains WA on the 28th. Red Crossbill: Steve Landes observed one at his house near Highbanks MP on the 28th. White-winged Crossbill: One was at Gifford Park on the 28th. Neil Cade reported that 10-plus were still present at Spring Grove Cemetery in section 19 on the 1st.
