My wife, Sharon, is the Director of Sustainability Initiatives at the COSI science museum in downtown Columbus, a block from City Hall. One of her projects was to restore a small section of the grounds to native prairie. On May 25 and 26 she observed, photographed and took a video of a female Northern Bobwhite that had taken up at least temporary residence in the prairie. Photos and the video clip are available through Flickr at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38148761@N08/ You may need to sign in to see these items, and can do so if you have a Yahoo Groups account. Sharon was careful to pan back in the video clip to show that the Bobwhite was clearly strolling about the grounds of COSI. We checked for the bird again on May 29 and 30 and could not find it, but some of the grasses are pretty thick, so she could still be there. Either way, this is another great example of how restoration in even the most damaged urban landscapes can produce remarkable results. The area in question was simply mowed grass three years ago.
