In these flush migration days of May, everyone tries to hit woods and woodlots since the most spectacular migrants are woodland birds: tanagers, grosbeaks, and of-course wood warblers. But there are shorebirds and grassland birds also on the move, and this morning I elected to visit Glacier Ridge, a MetroPark noted for its grasslands. It also has some pocket woodlands, so I didn't do without woodland birds; they just weren't in the abundance you might expect at big woodlands like Blendon, Blacklick, or Lawrence. Notables included: E,Kingbirds - 2 calling along the bikepath SE of the parking area Red-eyed Vireos - 2-3 singing in the 3 woodlots in the vicinity Yellow-thr.Vireo - 1 singing in the woodlot west of the parking area SEDGE WREN - 1 singing along the north loop of the multi-purpose trail, the earliest I've ever had one in central Ohio Brown Thrasher - 1 singing north of the windmill Nashville Warblers - 6-8 scattered around the wood edges Yellow-rumped - common, with 25+ in 3 different woodlots Ovenbird - 1 Common Yellowthroat - 7-8 in the grasslands and marshes around the trail Tanagers - both Scarlet and Summer were singing in the woodlot west of the main parking area Field Sparrows - very common, with 15-20 singing in different field edges Grasshopper Sparrows - 4-5 singing in the grassland areas Savannah Sparrows - 2 singing in the grasslands north of the windmill Henslow's Sparrow - 1 singing in the successional field SW of the parking area No Bobolinks or Vesper Sparrows, but it was a good day to be out. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
