I'm trying to decide if my sighting is valid and if, or how, I should record it on the OBBA. Tonight, I observed a northern parula that was collecting small bits of a coconut plant liner from a hanging pot on my deck. The bird returned twice and left with a beak full of coconut strands. My immediate thought was it was collecting nesting material but from the research that I did, the parula nests exclusively in beard moss, and I honestly don't know of any that is growing nearby. The OBBA also lists it as a regional rarity for SW Montgomery County. I am on the edge of a ravine but the closest water is Twin Creek and about half-a-mile away - is that appropriate habitat? I thought I might do some check nearby looking for trees with beard moss but I'm wondering how far they would travel with nesting material? Thanks in advance for any help Jean ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
