I tried posting this from my OSU email account but it apparently hasn't gone through yet... Just got a call from John Kuenzli who is currently heading south from Lake Erie. John was traveling south on Highway 51 in NW Sandusky County when he came across a hunting LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. The exact location is about 2 miles south of I-90 and about 3/4 mile north of what is being labeled as Busy Corners, Ohio (before you get to a short road called Avers Rd if heading north). Attached at the bottom is a Google Maps link showing the exact GPS fix of his current location. When you look at satellite imagery of the surrounding area, there seems to be a decent of hedge/treeline of sorts directly to the east. In general, the whole area looks like it could have potential nesting habitat. John has only seen one bird but might this bird be a resident nester? It's possible that this shrike could be a migrant but it's certainly worth more searching for possible nesting behavior. This location is in OBBA2 block 37A6CE. If you happen to go search for the shrike, do the Atlas a favor and record any other nesting species in the area (http://www.ohiobirds.org/obba2/blockmap/printblock.php?Page=37&ClickLat=41.43860847395721&ClickLon=-83.28392028808594&PrinterFriendly=Large+Map). Good luck everyone!
