Today -- May 19th -- I had my second-ever Baltimore oriole in the yard... the first was last year on May 25th. I hope they make it an annual pilgrimage from now on. Later in the day I had a common nighthawk peenting as he flew over the yard. Only the 2nd or 3rd time I've had one here. I went to record this in the book and it seems I had one last year on... you guessed it... May 25th! Orioles and nighthawks arriving in tandem?? Odd coincidence. Yesterday, I saw some chimney swifts at a residence I was working at. As I was watching them circle around the yard, one disappeared down the house's chimney! I have never had the opportunity to view this before, and had no idea they would live in a relatively small chimney! Very cool! I heard a barred owl calling in broad daylight today, around 1pm, as I lunched at the Horseshoe Pond trailhead in CVNP, Peninsula. Also had blue winged warbler, common yellowthroat, yellow warbler, phoebe, great crested flycatcher, chipping sparrow and catbirds to go along with my ham sandwich.
