Birding on Saturday and saw a lump up on a high branch. First road west of the "Pit" over the ridge. Without a scope, my fellow Birders and I threw out Woodcock and then Snipe as possibilities. From our angle we could not get a good head shot. We all agreed that Whippoorwill and Nighthawk could be possibilities, but, we almost wanted to dismiss these birds because it seemed to be roosting too high. Our bird books said that they do roost on "lower" branches, but, we were thinking that they were mostly ground birds.

Went back to Greenlawn today and ran into a couple with a spotting scope. I march them over to the bird. The bird was still there, but, gave us a much better profile view. Including a great shot of the head. The avid birders had no doubts that it was a Nighthawk.
