Sunday was a great day for backyard birding in Grafton, OH, Lorain County. HAIRY WOODPECKER - The Hairy has been at the feeder all weekend. This is his first visit. I had a lot of fun explaining to friends and neighbors the difference between the downy and the hairy, but it's much easier to explain when the downy is on one feeder and the hairy and red-bellied are next to each other on the other feeder! AMERICAN REDSTART - My 5 year old daughter and I were ecstatic to have a redstart come within 10 feet of us and put on a show at the Indian Hollow Reservation bike trail. We stopped and watched it for 2-3 minutes. She got a great look at it and saw the orange flashes on its side. My hands were shaking because I was SO excited for her to see such a beautiful bird! WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCHES - An adult was feeding 4 nuthatch hatchlings on the Bradford Pear tree near our feeders. We all watched the young cling upside down on the tree and shake their wings until the adult brought them food. It was great education for the kids.
