Hi all, A Mississippi Kite was seen yesterday, and again today briefly, in Worthington, which is suburb on the north side of Columbus. Bernie Master managed to get some good photos. The bird was seen in the vicinity of Tucker Drive, and if anyone locally wants to look for it, following Tucker Drive to where it dead ends near the Olentangy River might be a good bet, as this is the immediate vicinity of where it was seen both days. Just use mapquest.com and you should have no problems finding this spot, and parking at the end of Tucker Drive and walking the bike path along the river might be a good approach. There are also unconfirmed but interesting reports of what may be the same bird from the vicinity of Don Scott airport, which is perhaps one and a half miles west of where the kite was seen. The airport and the floodplain of the Olentangy has plenty of habitat that would be suitable for nesting Mississippi Kites, and this species has been actively expanding its range and turning up in new locales far from known nesting sites. We've already got confirmed nesting at the Brass Ring Golf Course in Hocking County, but I'd bet there'll be other breeders turning up. Worthington-area birders should keep their eyes peeled.
