Forwarding this on behalf of local expert John Herman: BW Recently, there has been some lack of communication on the part of birders, to security personnel, about the upland sandpipers at the Mansfield Lahm airport. I have spoken with airport officials, who request that birders use some discretion and communicate with security if requested, while viewing the uplands at the airport. The Mansfield airport is an airforce base. I believe it just requires a little common sense and communication on the part of birders, for us to enjoy this incredible, endangered shorebird. We don't want the airport "bird-proofed", with uplands no longer nesting there. There are currently few Ohio locations where this shorebird nests, alarmingly fewer than were recorded during the 1980s breeding bird atlas. I have one final request. Please do not play an upland sandpiper call recording to get the birds "at your feet." This endangered shorebird does not need harassment. Thank you for your cooperation.
