Most of the birds I saw and heard at Sheldon's Marsh today were the usual ones. In addition I heard a Marsh Wren singing in the cattails near one of the viewing areas and a Sora calling from the cattails towards the lake. The Sora was also there yesterday. The big surprise was a Red-breasted Nuthatch. I haven't seen one here since the spring. The bird had a short tail and bill, darker than usual plumage, somewhat mottled (or very dirty), and wasn't wary of humans. Two ladies were watching it when I came upon them and the bird was less than 15 ft away. It seemed undisturbed by our presence and flew to a tree that was even closer to us. I wonder if it might have been a juvenile? I neither saw nor heard any other Red-breasted Nuthatches.
